The New Tesla Model Y 2024

Tesla Model Y

While the 2024 Tesla Model Y shares its base with the Model 3, the transition to its high-riding SUV body style sacrifices some of the sedan’s satisfying road manners. Handling is less agile, leading to a clumsy feeling in corners and making it less enjoyable to drive enthusiastically. However, the Model Y’s cabin is spacious, and its cargo area is more accommodating, making it a practical choice for those regularly shuttling kids or hauling bulky items. With a driving range of up to 330 miles for the Long Range model, the Model Y offers one of the highest ranges in the EV class, surpassing rivals like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Volkswagen ID.4.

Pricing

The 2024 Tesla Model Y starts at $44,630 and goes up to $54,130 depending on the trim and options. For those prioritizing driving range, the Long Range and Performance models offer 310 and 285 miles of range, respectively. We recommend the Long Range model for its optimal balance of range and performance. While customization options are limited, buyers can add the optional third row of seats for $2500. The Model Y lineup starts with the Standard Range rear-wheel drive trim, offering rear-wheel drive. The more compelling Long Range and Performance models feature dual motors for higher combined horsepower and all-wheel drive, offering impressive acceleration.

Performance

The Model Y’s Long Range and Performance models deliver impressive acceleration, with the Long Range model reaching 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and the Performance model achieving an even quicker 3.6-second blast. However, the Model Y doesn’t offer the same level of driving satisfaction as the Model 3 due to its higher center of gravity, which dulls its handling. The Y’s ride is also rougher over road imperfections compared to the Model 3.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The Model Y’s range varies depending on the model, with the Long Range offering 310 miles and the Performance model offering 285 miles. The Standard Range models with rear-wheel drive and 19-inch wheels offer a range of up to 260 miles. The Model Y comes with different wheel options, with the Performance model featuring 20-inch wheels, a lowered suspension, and a higher top speed of 155 mph.

Fuel Economy

The Long Range model is estimated to achieve 127 MPGe in the city and 117 MPGe on the highway, while the Performance model’s estimates are 115 MPGe city and 106 MPGe highway. In real-world testing, the Long Range model achieved 94 MPGe over a 200-mile highway test route, while the Performance model achieved 98 MPGe.

The 2024 Tesla Model YThe Model Y’s large, slim infotainment display in the middle of the dashboard controls almost every function, including climate controls and the speedometer. The Model Y offers entertainment features such as embedded Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube apps, as well as video games, perfect for passing time while charging at a public station. However, these distractions are disabled while the vehicle is in motion.

What’s New for 2024?

For the 2024 model year, Tesla has not announced any changes to the Model Y. However, Tesla’s unpredictable nature means that mid-year alterations are always a possibility. A styling refresh for the Tesla Model Y, code named Project Juniper, is expected to debut soon but will likely be sold as a 2025 model.
